Test of English as a Foreign Language

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (or TOEFL, pronounced β€œtoe-full") evaluates the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting. It is an admission requirement for non-native English speakers at many English-speaking colleges and universities in USA and other countries. A TOEFL score is valid for two years. The TOEFL is administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) and is conducted at many locations in India, as an internet based test.

What is TOEFL?

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It measures skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) is the most common format, while the TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) is offered where the internet-based option is unavailable. Scores range from 0 to 30 for each section, with a maximum total score of 120 for the iBT. TOEFL scores are valid for two years. Institutions use TOEFL scores to evaluate English language skills for admissions or language proficiency requirements.

What are the different variants of the TOEFL exam?

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam has two main variants: the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) and the TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test). The TOEFL iBT is administered via computer and assesses reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills through interactive tasks. The TOEFL PBT is a paper-based format offered in areas where the internet-based option is not available, evaluating listening, structure and written expression, reading comprehension, and writing skills. It’s advisable to refer to the official TOEFL website or contact the testing center for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the availability and details of each TOEFL variant.

How is the TOEFL exam structured?

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam is structured differently depending on the version. The TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) consists of reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections conducted via computer. The TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) includes listening comprehension, structure and written expression, reading comprehension, and writing sections. The duration of the exam can vary, typically taking around 3 to 4 hours to complete. It’s advisable to consult the official TOEFL website or contact the testing center for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the exam structure.

What is the duration of the TOEFL exam?

The total duration of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam depends on the version of the test and the number of sections included. Here’s a general breakdown of the duration for each version:

  1. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test):

    • The TOEFL iBT typically lasts about 3 hours and 10 minutes.
    • The Reading section takes approximately 54 to 72 minutes.
    • The Listening section takes approximately 41 to 57 minutes.
    • The Speaking section takes approximately 17 minutes.
    • The Writing section takes approximately 50 minutes.
    • There is an optional 10-minute break after the Listening section.
  2. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test):

    • The TOEFL PBT generally takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes.
    • The Listening section takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
    • The Structure and Written Expression section takes approximately 25 minutes.
    • The Reading Comprehension section takes approximately 55 minutes.
    • The Writing section takes approximately 30 minutes.
    • There is typically a short break between sections.
How is the TOEFL exam scored?

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam is scored on a scale specific to each section. For the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test), the reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections are scored on a scale of 0 to 30. The TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) uses a scale of 31 to 68 for each section. The writing section of both versions is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 6. Scores are valid for two years from the test date. Individual institutions may have their own score requirements, so it’s advisable to check with them for specific expectations.

What is the validity period of the TOEFL score?

The validity period of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores is typically two years from the test date. This means that your TOEFL scores are considered valid for admissions and language proficiency requirements for up to two years from the date you took the exam. After the expiration of the two-year period, the scores are no longer considered valid by colleges, universities, or other institutions. It’s important to keep this validity period in mind when planning your academic and professional endeavors and ensuring that your scores are within the acceptable timeframe for the programs or institutions you are interested in.
